Should You Drain Your Motor Oil With The Engine Running?

My buddy just told me about his uncle Bob who owns a ’71 Cuda.  This gentleman has really owned this Cuda since 1971 and it presently has 20,000 miles on it.  When I heard him say Cuda, my jaw nearly dropped.  And it’s a convertible to boot!  He was obsessed with maintenance and had a unique strategy for modifying his motor oil even though in hot pursuit of engine perfection.

Right here comes the crazy component.  Apart from Bob’s Cuda, he had an early ’70′s super Beetle and he was totally preoccupied with having immaculate oil running in his engines.  With his super beetle he would drain the oil out hot, then start the engine with the oil plug out to get the final bit of oil to flow out the bottom of the engine.

He would let it idle for 15 minutes but he would By no means drive it around like that, wouldn’t rev or load the engine…just allow it sit there till the last drops of oil dripped into the oil pan.

Crazy and here’s my query.  How could an individual assume that operating an engine with no oil for any period of time is much more useful compared to obtaining the last drop of motor oil out of the engine?

And more how could he have completed this for decades and not caused an engine failure.  From operating on engines you most likely know initial hand that oil leaves a film on all the engine parts and the fine film on the cylinder walls just doesn’t drain off when you drain the oil.  There is nonetheless some protection there even if the sump is empty.

If any person out there’s nervous about dry engine starts, they can just contact great ole uncle Bob and he’ll allow you know if there’s something to be worried about.

I had to ask my buddy if uncle Bob utilised to run his V8 Cuda dry to get out all the oil and was answered with a big fat NO…and I do not have to ask why (ha ha).  A V8 is a greater risk than a dual port, air cooled, 1600 CC VW engine.

If you never know no matter whether your vehicle has a V6 or a 4-cyl, I very recommend that you never adjust your very own oil. You're asking for difficulty. Just take it to the dealer, they'll use the acceptable oil.

  1. count the spark plugs or look at the top of the engine. you better do what they tell ya

  2. To tell how many cylinders you have look at your spark plug wires and count how many there are the one in the center doesn’t count but generally you are okay to run a 5w-30 or just plain 30w they are more of a guidline as to what you should use

  3. i own a shop and if you,ll look at the engine it will say if its a v-6 or not,and id use a good 5-w-30 oil in it,its a better oil than than the 5-w-20 is,and will help it to last longer also good luck i hope this helps.

  4. Use any good brand name motor oil,but you should get someone who knows a little more about your car to change your oil.

  5. Usually if you open the hood, it will be printed on top of the engine. If not there you can find it by reading the Vin number and comparing it to the Vin codes that should be in the front of your manual.

  6. The V6 has a silver plastic engine cover that says V6 on it above the Toyota logo.

You don’t have to use Toyota-brand oil. Any brand name oil like Castrol, Pennzoil, Valvoline, or Mobil will do if it’s an acceptable weight – 5W-20 for 4-cyl.

Some have argued that 5W-30 oil is better because 5W-20 is too thin, and that the manufacturer recommends 5W-20 only because they wanted better fuel economy numbers to provide to the EPA. I would stick with the factory-recommended specs for now.

I recommend changing the oil more often that the factory recommendations. 3,500 miles is my recommendation for conventional oils for a Toyota 4-cyl. 4,000 miles for semi-synthetic, and 5,000 for full synthetic oils.

  7. being a 2007 like that,i would use what they call for,so you wont mess up your warranty.

  8. pop the hood, look at the top of the engine, is narrow or is it wide, or you can look at the emmission sticker, 2.2l (i believe) is a 4 cylinder and the 3.0 is the v6
